C-Span

C-SpanC-Span broadcasts live and recorded coverage of the legislative processes in the United States and from other countries of interest to the United States.  C-Span is an abbreviation of Cable-Satellite Public Affairs Network, and is owned and operated exclusively by the american cable industry.  Along with its legislative coverage, the network also airs non-stop coverage of government proceedings and public affairs programming. Like the BBC in the United Kingdim, C-SPAN does not accept outside, revenue-generating advertising, with the only commercials airing are for its own programmes and products.

C-Span operates three television channels and one radio station.  All three of the television channels also air events such as Presidential press conferences and speeches, as well as other government meetings such as Federal Communications Commission hearings and Pentagon press conferences, alongside their legislative programming.

The majority of C-Span's operations are located in Washington DC, on Capitol Hill, however and archive is also maintained in West Lafayette, Indiana at the Purdue Research Park under the direction of Professor Robert Browning.

Airs live and recorded output of the Senate, and also some coverage of the British Parliament via the BBC's Parliamentary channel, BBC Parliament.

CBC Newsworld

CBC NewsworldCBC Newsworld is a Canadian English language cable television specialty news channel owned and operated by the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC). It broadcasts into over 10 million homes in Canada. It is the world's third-oldest television service of this nature, after CNN in the United States and Sky News in the United Kingdom.

With CNN already being widely available in Canada, during the 1980s both private and public Canadian broadcasters began to apply for a licence for a similar 24-hour news service in Canada. In 1987 the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) awarded a licence to the CBC, and on July 31, 1989, CBC Newsworld began broadcasting.

CTV News Channel

CTV News ChannelThe CTV News Channel is a Canadian English language cable television headline news specialty channel that was launched on October 17, 1997. It is owned and operated by CTV Television Inc, a division of CTV globemedia.  It is the sister network of the Canadian business-only channel, Business News Network (BNN).

Deutsche Welle

Deutsche WelleDW-TV is the television division of Deutsche Welle and has been on air since 1992 and operates as a full-service news, information and entertainment broadcaster.  It offers viewers around the globe news and information from Germany, Europe and the World. Independent, objective and competent.

DW-TV is up-to-date, precise, sincere and easy to follow. The core of DW-TV’s programming consists of news every hour as well as current events reports, magazines and documentaries from politics, business, culture and sports.  It broadcasts in German, English, Arabic and Spanish. Produced at its studios in Berlin, DW-TV’s programming is broadcast around the world via satellite.

TVNZ 7

TVNZ 7TVNZ 7 is a commercial-free New Zealand 24-hour news and information channel on Freeview digital television platform and on SKY Television Digital from 1 July 2009. It is produced by Television New Zealand, which received Government funding to launch two additional channels. The channel went to air just after 10am on March 25, 2008 with a looped preview reel. After a countdown which lasted at least an hour, the channel was officially launched at 12 noon on March 30, 2008 with a special "kingmaker" political debate held within the Parliament building and featuring most of the elected minor party leaders.

It features TVNZ News Now updates at the top of the hour from 6am-11pm, with a specialised rolling 10 minute bulletin 'zone' between 6am and 9am, where 18 bulletins will show in that zone. TVNZ 7 also features an hour long bulletin, TVNZ News At 8 at 8pm each night, hosted on weeknights by ONE News Tonight presenter Greg Boyed, and formerly also by Geraline Knox, a lawyer and broadcaster who presented news bulletins on NTV-7.

Sky News Australia

Sky News AustraliaSky News Australia comenced its 24-hour news service at 5pm on the evening of February 19th 1996, becoming the first and only Australian produced television news channel.  Since that first broadcast, Sky News has grown to become an essential part of the Australian media landscape. Sky News Australia features news on the hour, every hour and headlines every fifteen minutes changing the way Australians get their television news.

Apart from the flagship news on the hour service, Sky News also produces a variety of half hour programs each week, including Agenda, Eco Report, Health Report and Sportsline.  Sky News is available in more than 2.5 million homes and locations across Australia and New Zealand on the FOXTEL, AUSTAR, Optus and Neighbourhood Cable pay television networks and on the Sky pay television network in New Zealand.

Sky News New Zealand

skynews-nzlogoSky News New Zealand is a rebroadcast of Sky News Australia however carries the NZ branding, and appears on SKY Television. The programming is nearly identical to Sky News Australia, except for a nightly bulletin, plus a twice weekly afternoon one, being produced in New Zealand.

In the late 1990s Sky News Australia started broadcasting in New Zealand, replacing Sky News from the UK. Shortly afterwards, Sky News Australia New Zealand was launched, with a small amount of New Zealand-specific content.

France 24

France 24Launched on December 2006, France 24 is a 24/7 international news channel. Its mission is to cover international current events from a French perspective and to convey French values throughout the world.  France 24 is a true news hub that broadcasts its programs over the airwaves and over the internet in French, English and Arabic.

The channel is available in its different languages on the main satellite positions and commercial feeds (satellite, cable, DSL) in Europe, the Near and Middle East and Africa, not to mention New-York and Washington D.C. 

Euronews

EuronewsEuronews is the leading international news channel covering world news from a European perspective. Launched in 1993, euronews today is a multi-lingual (English, French, German, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, Russian and Arabic), multi-platform news service.

euronews offers programmes and interactive services on cable, satellite and terrestrial TV. In addition, euronews is available in hotels, on airline networks, ADSL, internet, PDA and mobile phones.

MSNBC

ImageMSNBC is a 24-hour cable news channel based in the United States and available in Canada. Its name is a combination of "MSN" and "NBC".

A separate company, msnbc.com, is the news website for the NBC News family, featuring original stories and video as well as content from NBC News and partners such as The New York Times, Newsweek and The Washington Post.

Two partnerships with the name MSNBC were founded in 1996 by Microsoft and General Electric's NBC unit, which is now NBC Universal. Although Microsoft and NBC shared operations of MSNBC cable at its founding, it was announced on December 23, 2005, that NBC Universal would purchase a majority stake in the television network, which left Microsoft with 18%. The two companies remain 50-50 partners in msnbc.com. MSNBC, like sister channel CNBC, shares the NBC logo of a rainbow peacock. MSNBC is currently ranked third in cable news channel viewership, falling behind CNN in second, and the Fox News Channel, which is ranked number one.

Fox News

ImageFox News is a general news channel broadcast primarily for a US audience, but is also viewable worldwide via the resources of News Corp's broadcasting presence in many countries, including the UK, on Sky Digital.  Fox News broadcasts business news updates throughout the day, and has a one hour business programme which airs at 4pm ET called Your World, with Neil Cavuto.

The channel was launched on October 7th, 1996 to around 17 million cable subscribers and slowly rose to prominence in the late 1990's, challenging CNN's dominance in the marketplace. In terms of regular viewers (Nielsen Ratings), Fox News now rates as the United States' number one cable news network. Some critics and observers of the channel say that Fox News Channel promotes conservative political positions. The Fox News Channel publicly denies any bias in the channel's reporting.

Sky News

Sky NewsSky News is a British rolling television news channel providing 24 hour news coverage including the latest breaking news. Currently broadcasting from its headquarters in Osterley, near London, the channel provides domestic and international coverage to audiences in the UK as well as around the globe. Sky News started broadcasting on 5 February 1989 as part of the then four-channel Sky Television service. Sky News provides an hourly news radio service to multiple radio networks in the UK. Although the station is targeted at the UK and Ireland, it is carried around the world on a number of services, particularly being favoured by expatriates who want to keep up-to-date with the latest news from home. The channel currently has seven UK bases each with their own correspondents, but the channel can also call upon a wide range of resources and global bureaux provided by its parent company NewsCorp.
